Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
