The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
