The tally of fatalities resulting from the transport jet which caught fire and went down has now climbed to 13, per latest statements.
City Leader's Announcement
Traveling to the Union’s vigil, I learned of a 13th person that died as a result of the aircraft incident,” stated the local official in a online message. “My thoughts is with the loved ones, associates and peers of all who were lost in this recent calamity. We will get through this together.”
Casualties Identified
A release from the company listed the officers on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies go out to every staff member who has been touched and all in our local community – supporting you and ensuring you get the support and aid you need is our focus,” the firm’s message stated.
Probe Updates
National investigators disclosed that the jet’s wing burst into flames and an engine fell off shortly after liftoff from the airfield, causing the jet to crash and burst into a fireball.
The safety agency announced it is investigating the aircraft’s service record, that was in Texas for maintenance several weeks ahead of the incident.
Flight tracking information indicated the jet was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from early September to 18 October.
“We are aware that this jet was located in that city,” said an NTSB member on later, without a precise time frame. “We will review each aspect of repairs that was done, including the San Antonio time, all the way to the time of the journey.”
Recovery of Critical Evidence
The cockpit voice recorder and information unit were found, and the engine was discovered on the runway.
The devices – referred to as data containers – were designed to endure accident forces and severe heat from fires, and they looked to be intact when discovered within the crash debris. Authorities plan on analyzing information from the black boxes.
Aircraft’s final data recordings displayed an elevation of that level and a speed of 210 mph ahead of the impact.
Service Background
Based on FAA files dated that date, a fracture on a component within the tank area needed maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which indicated it provides aircraft servicing for the company’s aircraft and operates a maintenance center in that city, refused to speak, but stated it would work closely when officials reached out it.
Activities Resume
Meanwhile, UPS Worldport activities resumed that evening with its Next Day Air or evening process, spokesperson Jim Mayer stated. The three runways at the aviation hub were also open again.
The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the organization’s biggest. The facility engages more than a large number of people in the locality, handles numerous aircraft per day and sorts in excess of four hundred thousand packages an hour.
Local Support
A candlelight vigil was organized on the evening of that date by the local Teamsters Union, which represents employees at the Louisville airport, the company’s largest freight center.
Teamsters Local 89, which stands for UPS workers, started the memorial with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the approximate hour of the incident two days earlier.
“This incident was so sudden, so surprising,” the leader addressed the group of 200. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to any one of those who we have said farewell to.”
