Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
