World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Severe Shortage of Weight-Loss Medications

Under one in 10 people who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it issues its initial guidance on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are major barriers to widespread availability to the injections that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the present most optimistic outlook, the production of such drugs could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to increase availability, by approaches like patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Work

The injections imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so individuals consume fewer calories.

People usually see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the medication, as their typical food cravings resume.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your likelihood for contracting diseases, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and specific cancers.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
