Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
